デーヴィッド・セダリス。ラジオ放送でもニューヨークの舞台でも、そしてベストセラーリストとしてもひっぱりだこのエッセイストだ。彼の人気は、メイシーズでクリスマスのサンタ役を務めたときの体験にもとづいて書かれた痛快エッセイ『Santaland Diaries』に端を発している（この話は２つの作品集『Barrel Fever』『Holidays on Ice』に収められている。どちらも持っていて損のない本だ）。セダリスの毒舌の才は本第4作目でも健在で、ノースカロライナ州での風変わりな子供時代、奇妙な経歴、そして恋人と手を取り合ってのフランスへの移住などが、辛口のコメディー仕立てで語られている。ハチャメチャな語りは絶好調のノリ。脱線もお手のものだが、テーマはちゃんとある。「人間のコミュニケーション能力の欠如」だ。タイトルの「Me Talk to Pretty One Day」も、自分を含めてパリでフランス語を学ぶ学生たちが、いかに下手な会話でフランス語を台無しにしているかを英語に字訳（transliterate）したものである。「神は救う」（God Saves）ならぬ「神はヒゲをそる」（God Shaves）というエッセイでは、彼とあらゆる国から来た彼のクラスメートが、モロッコのイスラム教徒にイースター（復活祭）について教えようとする。「それは神の子供のためのパーティーさ」と1人が言えば、「そして彼はある日…2本の（交差してる）材木の上で…死んじまうんだ」と、もう1人が言う。
セダリスは、それぞれ別の日にイースターを祝う、プロテスタントの母とギリシャ正教の父との口論についても回顧している。また他のエッセイでは、風変わりな母親との密接なきずなや、IBMの重役である父親との浅はかなる不和についてつづっている。「ぼくが科学における最大の謎だとずっと思っているのは、男は自分と共通の関心事がまったくない6人の子供の父親になれることだ」
著者の家族や知人たちのエピソードの一つ一つから、ユーモアと洞察が伝わる。ノースカロライナの言語療法士（「彼女にとって『pen』という言葉は2音節だ」）はセダリスの舌足らずの癖を矯正しようとするが、彼は、不得手な「S」の音が入った単語を慎重に避けて、彼女の試みをこなみじんに砕く。ギターの教師、ちびのマンシーニ先生は、セダリスも自分と同じように、乳房に対する強迫観念があると思い込んでいるばかりか、「Light My Fire（ハートに火をつけて）」を、これはキャンプでマッチを欲しがるカブスカウトの歌である、というとんちんかんな解釈で歌ったりする。極めつけに、シカゴ美術館での講師という不適任な仕事に就いたときは、著者は生徒たちに、テレビの昼メロを見て次回の展開予想の小論文を書いてこい、という宿題を出す…。
端的にいえば、本書はスポールディング・グレイの『Swimming to Cambodia』以来の極めてへそ曲がりな自伝である。本書を読まない理由があるとすれば、著者が生来のひょうきんな声で語っているのを聞くほうがいいという場合だけだ。その向きには、オーディオカセット版の『Me Talk Pretty One Day』を手に入れることをお勧めする。

Plain hilarious　　（2005-05-24）
This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. The odd characters made it all the more funny. Being the first Sedaris book I have read, I am up and ready for more of his stories. He is a witty and humorous writer. On Bullshit, The Usurper and Other Stories, Running with Scissors are fine and hilarious books to read.

mundane becomes funny, funny becomes hilarious　　（2002-04-07）
Let's face it, David Sedaris does not write about the great mysteries and the daunting challenges in life -- they don't happen in his. But he doesn't let that stop him from deriving utmost pleasure from it, nor you from sharing his enjoyment of otherwise-bland or merely-exasperating experiences.
Whether his childhood in NC, his experience of finding himself having to explain easter to a muslim, or his trip to France with his boyfriend, his talents do not lie merely with his hilarious writing style. It is in his ability to take the mundane and make it funny; to turn even the already-funny into the hilarious; and to turn the tables on to observers and critics of his defects, and make THEM the object of his and our amusement.
There's a message here that he may not even be intent on sending, but he nonetheless eloquently expresses BY LIVING IT. "You just CAN'T win against David Sedaris. Diss him, poke fun at him, dump him into a teeth-grittingly frustrating situation; he'll always find a way to immensely enjoy himself and get the last always-innocuous laugh."
By all means, read the book in public if you prefer. But be forewarned -- you'll be chuckling to yourself, even occasionally bursting out in laughter, so much that people will suspect you're as insane as the way David Sedaris looks at life.

Laughs galore　　（2000-11-16）
Another winner by David Sedaris. The true stories of how he comes to live in France and tries (and succeeds) to learn French are hysterically funny. My personal favorite is the chapter when all the foreign Christian students in the French class try to explain the concept of Easter to the Muslim student using about 150 vocabulary words.
