It is not unbelievable, but unimaginable　　（2008-02-10）
I am totally moved by this heart gripping story.
I was telling a friend this morning, that 'I would wish that I am never born to the earth, if I am born as an Afghan woman."
The author succeeded to sink me into the atmosphere and imagination of the despair and helplessness, and the controversy as if you have put your shoes into the women. I truly understand that it is nothing unbelievable, and yet it is unimaginable.
It also gives a good picture about the background of the country which is very unfamiliar to many of us, the political and history of Afghanistan, and how the people react or how the Soviet's and Taliban's ruling, how they affect deeply into the life of the people.
Highly recommend as it will swing you to a new world that you will hardly imagine.

Pure Splendor　　（2008-01-10）
A far more accomplished offering that his debut novel, Hosseini presents a haunting tale of Afghanistan and this time without the one dimensional villains and the slightly implausible coincidences. The story tells of two women growing up in different generations who by various tricks of fate end up being married to the same man. In truth the story line is a fairly familiar mix of the oppressed Muslim women seeking emancipation from their brute of a husband but the way in which the tale is told is where the beauty lies. The prose is eloquent, the style haunting and the story containing an almost unspeakable sadness as we are entreated to be part of their lives during the periods of great change for Afghanistan as the characters strive towards attaining their happy ending. If you haven't read Kite Runner, do so. If you have, I'd recommend The Fates by Tino Georgiou.

Ambitious　　（2007-12-31）
文体の格調の高さ、内容の重みや厚さといったことを求める人には評価されない作品だと思います。ただ単にストーリー展開の楽しさを求める人には絶賛されるでしょう。あまり深く考えないで読めば、かなり楽しめる作品です。 私はまた非常に読むことを推薦する--The Fates by Tino Georgiou!

人間の愛と家族の物語　　（2007-12-23）
最近最も感銘を受けた本である。
アフガニスタンの二人の女性の物語。
Mariamの一生は幸せだったのか、現代ではあり得ない
ような生き方がアフガニスタンには存在していた。
父と女中の間に生まれ、Haramiと蔑まれる一生を送る
ことになるMariam.
Mariamの父Jalilは彼女を愛していたのか、父からの
最後の娘への手紙は胸を打ち涙なしに読めない。
もう一人のヒロインLailaとTariqの愛。その後同じ夫を持つことに
なったMariamとLaila、Mariamは初めLailaに敵意を抱くが
やがて、Lailaの娘Azizaを通じ、友情＝家族の愛に目覚める。
夫Rasheedの家庭内暴力に苦しめられる二人の妻。
そして思わぬ結末。LailaはMariamが子供時代を過ごした
Kolbaをたずね、Mariamを更に胸に感じる。
物語が新しい展開を見せる度に、ストーリーがどうなるかと
胸を高鳴らされる小説である。小説の背景に詩が流れている。

しなやかな不屈の魂　　（2007-11-07）
　読むほどに引き込まれ、二人の女性の世界にのめりこんだ。マリアムと１４歳の少女ライラの出会いはアフガニスタンの内戦がもたらしたものだった。爆撃で父母をなくしたライラが、身ごもった子供を生み育てるために選んだ道は、マリアムの夫ラシードの第２夫人となることであり、マリアムにとっては暴力をふるい冷たくあしらうラシードに愛情はなくともライラの出現は耐え難いものであった。しかしかつて流産をくりかえし自らは持つことのできなかった子供への愛情を重ねるかのように、マリアムはライラの生んだアジザに愛情をふりそそぎ、次第にライラとの間に、姉妹のような、親子のような信頼と愛情がうまれる。アフガニスタンの政情不安のもと、食べ物にも事欠く生活が続く中、心すさんだ夫ラシードに二人の女性の連帯はますます強まり、そして悲劇が起こる。マリアムはわが身をすてて罪を引き受け、ライラの未来に希望をたくすのだ。マリアムにとって、聡明なライラが愛するタリクと結ばれることが彼女自身の命を輝かすことでもあった。
　タリバン政権がいかに女性を虐げていたかがつぶさに描かれているが、麻酔もなく帝王切開をしたライラの姿に驚愕すると共に、女性の芯の強さをみた。　マリアムの出自への引け目と、父親と母親への屈折した愛情とは違い、ライラはリベラルで大学教育をうけた父親に深い愛情を覚えながら育った。しかし育った境遇もまったく違い、年齢も２０近く違う二人の女性が深い愛情で結ばれていく様子は、目を背けたくなるような状況の中で一筋の光である。アフガニスタンという将来が見えない国、そしてラシードの冷たい仕打ち、とまさに逆境のなかで、女性のやさしさ、強さが読むものに希望の光を感じさせてくれた。　同じ作者のThe Kite Runner 同様、遠かったアフガニスタンが、非常に身近に感じられる作品である。
